Master Title
The Attitude Of Critical Theory Concerning Modernism and Postmodernism ( A Critical Analytical Study In Social Theories)
Master Abstract
This study analyzes the perspectives of the three generations of the Frankfurt School on modernity and postmodernity, highlighting their points of convergence and divergence. It adopts Critical Theory as its theoretical framework and employs historical and comparative methods along with qualitative content analysis. The study examines the contributions of six key thinkers: Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse, and Fromm from the first generation; Habermas from the second; and Honneth from the third. The findings show that all three generations shared a critical stance toward modernity and instrumental reason, emphasizing the emancipatory role of critique. However, they differed in their evaluation of modernity: the first generation adopted a pessimistic view, the second defended modernity as an unfinished project, and the third focused on its ethical and social dimensions through recognition theory.
