Individuation and the Unconscious in Selected Plays by Suzan-Lori Parks: A Study in the Light of Jungian Analytical Theory

Master Abstract

Abstract This study aims to use Carl Jung’s analytical psychology to examine Suzan-Lori Parks’s plays Topdog/Underdog (2002) and Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3) (2015), paying particular consideration to the personal and collective unconscious, archetypes, complex and the individuation process. A Jungian interpretation of Parks’s dramaturgy, which is full of symbolic elements and mythic underlying themes, uncovers the psychological depth hidden under the plays’ sociopolitical aspects. By applying Jungian notions like the persona, shadow, anima, complex and collective unconscious to the analysis of both plays, the psychological conflicts associated with African American identities, historical and social trauma, along with the pursuit of wholeness are revealed. Lincoln and Booth’s fraternal relationship in Topdog/Underdog conveys the shadow and shattered ego, leading to a catastrophic confrontation that illustrates their lack of integration. While in Father Comes Home from the Wars is presented in a mythological structure in which Hero, the main character, goes on an adventure similar to the mythological hero’s quest and experiences pain, disappointment and alteration as he realizes the Self. To more effectively understand Parks’s characters’ internal and external conflicts and the symbolic significance of their journeys this investigation applies Jungian theory to reveal the plays’ hidden psychological narratives.
