Master Title
Culture and Creativity: A Research in Psychological Anthropology of Innovators
Master Abstract
This research attempts to answer a central question: what is the relationship between culture and creativity? The researcher has identified a set of goals in line with this question, these goals are: (1) Identifying the features of the innovator's image about her/his creative self. (2) Identifying the nature of creativity, its importance from the perspective of the culture under discussion. (3) Identifying the features of the innovator's perspective (4) What are the innovator's conceptions about the criteria of success? How do they judge themselves? (5) Identifying the role played by the formal institutions interested in cultural implantation (education), the informal (family) in developing the creative abilities of scientific innovators. (6) Identifying the innovator's points of view about the relationship between creativity and religion. (7) Highlighting the role of the mainstream culture in the society, is it a stimulus or just a burden? (8) Identifying the elements of culture which support and facilitate creativity, and the elements that discourage it. (9) Identifying the link between gender and creativity, what is the nature of this relation? (10) Identifying the most important social obstacles to creativity as seen by innovators in the institutions of knowledge production.
The research has been carried out on a sample of 25 scientific innovators with patents, working in Beni-Suef University and the National Research Center. In order to achieve the goals of the research, the researcher has envisaged a conceptual framework based on Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital theory, and the systems' theory by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and an anthropological qualitative method based on a Semi structured interviews and Participant Observation.
The study has achieved a number of important findings, most important of which is that there is a close relationship between culture and creativity, as there are multidimensional features of the creator's self. The study also revealed that a set of features that characterize the creator like motivation, flexibility, and originality and other features. Also institutions of cultural implantation like family, religion, and educational system a pivotal role in developing creativity. The study also revealed that the prevailing culture does not value creation, and there is no interest in the innovators. The creators also have respect of time, and they plan the future. It has been revealed that gender is not a decisive factor in the creative process as a human exercise common among men and women. Finally, there are obstacles to the creative process like: the culture of religions prohibition, administrative authoritarianism, the demoralization of the spirit of the team work, the rigidity of laws and regulations, in addition to the dominance of administration on the academic field.
